Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson stated he narrowly avoided a potentially deadly accident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when a pair of track officials darted across the track right in his path

The dangerous situation took place on the third lap when track officials were observed on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to swap his compromised front wing

Competitor's Live Reaction

Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson radioed to his pit wall engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Could you believe what happened? I might have... taken their lives"

"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was seeing"

"I rejoined with a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two dudes sprinting across the track"

"I came close to striking one of them, honestly, it was incredibly risky"

Track Safety Questioned

"Clearly there's been a communication breakdown somewhere but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"

"We can't understand how on a ongoing race track track officials can be allowed to just run across the track in that manner. I don't understand the reason, I'm confident we'll get some form of reasoning, but this absolutely cannot recur"

Governing Body Reviewing

Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is currently investigating the events

"After an occurrence at turn one, track officials was advised that fragments were located on the track at the apex of that corner" declared the FIA

"During the third lap, safety personnel were alerted and placed on standby to enter the track and remove the wreckage once every vehicle had gone by"

"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had entered the pits, the instructions to dispatch officials were rescinded and a caution signal was raised in that area"

"Our inquiry continues what occurred following that moment"
