Trump and Japanese Recently Appointed Prime Minister Exchange Compliments and Vow to Reinforce ‘Extraordinary’ Relationship

In the course of a recent trip to Japan's capital, ex- American leader Trump together with the Japanese new Prime Minister Takaichi shared warm compliments and pledged to strengthen the already robust bilateral relations.

Key Points from the Encounter

Trump praised Prime Minister Takaichi as a ‘great’ leader and congratulated her on becoming Japan's first female premier. During their talks at Tokyo's official venue, the former president voiced confidence that Takaichi would prove to be one of the ‘great prime ministers’ of Japan.

The prime minister, who is a protégée of former Japanese leader Shinzo Abe, applauded Trump's efforts to address global conflicts and according to sources pledged to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Economic and Security Deals

The two governments revealed a series of joint projects in areas such as power, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals. Japan-based firms are exploring investments of up to $400 billion in the US.

Additionally, Tokyo had previously pledged $550bn in strategic American projects, loans, and guarantees as part of an arrangement to obtain exemption from the former president's tariffs.

These moves are viewed as potentially easing any upcoming requests from Trump for Tokyo to boost its defense spending. Takaichi responded to this by committing to accelerate plans to raise defense spending to two percent of gross domestic product.
