UN Removes Restrictions on Syrian President Ahead of White House Visit
Security Council representatives approved to a US resolution removing restrictions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria before his Washington trip next week.
He was appointed transitional president after leading a revolutionary movement that ousted the former president in the final month of 2024, ending thirteen long years of civil war.
America's diplomat UN ambassador Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "an emphatic political statement" that recognised Syria was in "a different period" since Assad was deposed.
He had been subject to United Nations restrictions while commanding the Muslim faction HTS, previously associated with the extremist organization. America delisted the organization from the catalog of global extremist entities this past July.
Additional Sanctions Relief
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on penalties against the Syrian interior official Anas Khattab.
The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of the penalties, posting on social media: "The nation shows its gratitude to Washington and supportive states for assisting the Syrian nation and citizens."
Imminent Washington Talks
The Syrian leader's Washington trip on Monday comes after US President Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president demonstrated "substantial headway" in establishing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.
Both presidents held discussions on their first occasion in May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia on a tour of the region.
Subsequent to that discussion, Trump portrayed Sharaa as a "tough guy" with a "very strong past".
His Islamist group HTS served as al-Qaeda's branch within Syria before he cut connections during 2016.
Prior United States Journey
The upcoming meeting is not his initial visit to America during this period. During September, he became the first Syrian leader to speak before the United Nations gathering at UN headquarters in almost 60 years.
In his speech, he declared the nation was "reclaiming its rightful place across international circles" and expressed solidarity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
